A Fall Elopement in the Mountains of Mie & Nara | The Quiet Magic of Sasayuri Ann Ozunu

There are places in Japan that don’t feel like places at all… they feel like thresholds. Doorways between the seen and unseen. Where history, nature, and spirit blur at the edges. Where you breathe differently without meaning to.

Sasayuri Ann Ozunu is one of those places.

Tucked along the border of Mie and Nara, a landscape threaded with national parks, ancient trails, waterfalls, legends of ninja and monks, it feels like a world slightly removed from the one the rest of us live in. A place where time bends. Where the mountains hold stories. Where silence has shape.

And last week, in the height of peak autumn … we witnessed a beautiful elopement unfold here.

Morning Light & Mountain Stillness

The day began with that kind of golden sun you only get in late fall. Bright. Sharp. Clear. The kind of light that makes everything feel possible.

Inside the villa, the morning was quiet. Calm. Almost reverent.

There is something about the way the rice terraces line the roads … the generations they represent … that grounds you instantly. Sasayuri Ann isn’t just a villa. It’s a heartbeat. A philosophy. A place built with intention, ritual, and love, shaped by the owner’s devotion to Shugendo and the practice of living in harmony with the land.

It’s impossible not to feel that as you get ready.

Everything slows. Everything softens.

And then … the first notes.

A Ceremony Carried by Ancient Sound

Two master musicians arrived: one with the Japanese flute, one with the koto. As they began to play, the entire valley shifted.

There’s nothing quite like hearing traditional Japanese melodies played live in an open villa garden, surrounded by mountains, under a sky impossibly blue. No traffic. No noise. No timeline except nature’s. Only music that feels like it’s been echoing here for centuries.

The first look happened in that soundscape. A moment equal parts ethereal and grounding. Fall colours blazing behind them. The wind weaving through the terrace fields.

And then the ceremony.

Emotional. Intentional. The kind of vows you feel before you hear. It was a celebration held with deep presence. The kind of presence Japan teaches you, gently and without ego.

Art, Nature, and a Newly Married Afternoon

After the ceremony, we made our way to a nearby Art Park … one of the region’s most extraordinary hidden gems.

Living installations. Structures shaped by light and shadow. Nature becoming art, and art becoming nature.

To walk through that space on their first afternoon as a married couple felt like a privilege. Every corner revealing something new. Every moment amplifying the last.

These are the days that always stay with you. The ones that imprint themselves quietly but permanently.

Tea, Cake & A Sunset That Felt Like a Blessing

Back at Sasayuri Ann, the celebration continued. An incredible wedding cake. Laughter echoing against the wood beams.

And then … one of our favourite traditions … a Japanese tea ceremony performed beautifully by our very own Sumika. A ceremony rooted in respect, gratitude, and connection. A perfect way to anchor the day.

And finally … as all perfect elopements should end … a Michelin-starred dinner at the villa. Just the two of them. Mountain air cooling outside. Lanterns glowing softly.

A night that didn’t need anything more.

Why Sasayuri Ann Ozunu Is One of Our Favourite Elopement Locations in Japan

Because it’s not just scenic. It’s spiritual. Because it’s not curated … it’s alive. Because the waterfalls and rice terraces tell a thousand stories before you even begin your own. Because it embodies everything couples look for when dreaming about eloping in Japan: tradition, nature, purity of experience, artistry, privacy, poetry and meaning.

Because here, the land participates in the wedding. The mountains listen. The wind answers. The ceremony doesn’t feel placed on the landscape … it feels drawn from it.

This elopement reminds us why Japan holds such power for couples seeking depth over spectacle, presence over performance, connection over convention.

And for us … it was a dream day from sunrise to dusk.

To our beautiful couple… thank you for trusting us with your story. We’re connected for life now.

As all the best elopements do.
