From Mt. Fuji to Byron Bay: A Story in Two Chapters

A Love Story Across Continents

Some love stories begin with a message. Lewis’ email was short but filled with intent: he wanted to propose to Grace on their winter trip to Japan. The challenge? He needed help planning something unforgettable while keeping it a complete surprise.

What followed was a flurry of secret emails, encrypted WhatsApp messages, and even a fake website and gift certificate (crafted so Grace would believe she was simply on a tour). Her mum was in on the ruse, slipping the “tour voucher” into a Christmas gift. The scene was set. Lewis wanted to pull off a proposal that Grace would never see coming. And honestly? He nailed it.

A Proposal at Mt. Fuji

By the time February came around, Grace believed she and Lewis were off on a quiet sightseeing adventure during their winter trip to Japan.

On a crisp winter morning, we picked them up at their hotel, a sign on our car announcing our fictional tour company. Grace had no idea. At sunrise, with Mt. Fuji watching over and a red torii gate theirs alone, Lewis got down on one knee. Grace said yes, the mountain blushed pink with dawn, and just like that, we were part of a forever story.

We didn’t just gain clients that day — we gained friends.

A Wedding Under the Fig Tree

A year later, Grace and Lewis invited us back into their story, this time in Byron Bay. Their wedding unfolded at the breathtaking Fig Tree Restaurant, where a 150-year-old fig tree stretched its arms over the ceremony. The space buzzed with joy. Their beautiful dogs trotting down the aisle as ring bearers (dachshunds, Millie and Maisie, adorable scene-stealers), old friends reuniting, families colliding into one shared history.

Cocktails in the olive grove, laughter spilling across the lawn, a sunset that melted into a full moon. Every moment felt cinematic. Later, guests wandered to the poolside, speeches left the crowd in tears and laughter, and the dance floor was nothing short of electric. It was one of those nights Byron Bay will remember, but more importantly, one Lewis and Grace’s people will never forget.

And because life loves serendipity: somewhere between speeches and the first dance, Grace and I discovered we went to the same high school (albeit a quite few years apart). The world is big, but sometimes it feels wonderfully small. That shared history only deepened the sense that we were exactly where we were supposed to be.

The Magic of Connection

What stood out most wasn’t just the incredible setting, or the thoughtful details. It was the people. Everyone in one place, for one reason, in one fleeting night. That’s the real magic of weddings — they compress a lifetime of connections into a single celebration.

Their story stretched from Japan to Australia, and it will keep stretching into all the tomorrows they’ll write together. For us, being trusted to tell this part of it was the greatest gift.

Because in the end, it’s not just a proposal or a wedding. It’s a life. And being able to hold those moments in photographs and film? That’s the story we’ll never stop chasing. Across places, across generations, across time.
