The Best Wedding Movies of All Time

Want to take a break from wedding planning? There’s nothing better than sitting down to binge watch some of the most fabulous wedding movies ever. Our list of the top wedding movies that have ever been made.

I’m actually a horror movie fan if I’m honest. And Dee’s into literally everything. As long as she has a bowl of popcorn, she’s settled. But we’ve ALWAYS had our list of favourite wedding movies. Best Wedding Movies of All Time! Movies about weddings… and also films not quite about weddings but have an unforgettable wedding IN them

We sometimes have them on the studio… (have to educate the millennials in the team on the genius of Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer, or the epicness of Carrie’s Vivienne Westwood gown in Sex and the City). We’ve also recently sent our World’s Best Wedding Movie List around to some of our couples who’ve had to postpose their wedding this year, to keep spirits up and quarantine a bit more fun. Did it work??

I have to say… for us, it’s been an absolute blast doing a wedding movie marathon again. It was the binge-watch of my dreams. We hadn’t seen some of these movies in FOREVER and we love them all. They were SO DIFFICULT to rank… but we all love a good ranking, so we did our best.  There was a lot of disagreement about the order – BUT we finally got there.

Need a Break from Wedding Planning?

So, if you’re in the middle of planning and need a break from vendor contracts and want some fun with your partner in the leadup to the day, or if you’re still on lockdown (like we are) and are just missing weddings in general… OR if you want a wedding game to play with your people, grab your bowl of popcorn and jump into some iconic big screen wedding scenes. Best Wedding Movies of All Time!!

#1 Bridesmaids (2011)

I don’t want to be predictable .. but Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne. Need I say more? And there was a Wilson Phillips performance, fog machine, fountain & laser lights. If ever we need a laugh… and a reason to love (?) the insanely wonderful industry we’re in… this is it. x

#2 Steel Magnolias (1989)

(Photo- SONY/FATHOM EVENTS)

I am and have always been obsessed with Dolly Parton. So there’s that. But this movie is iconic. And the ensemble cast full of amazing performances by Sally Field, Shirley MacLean, Olympia Dukakis Julia Roberts… it’s honestly not just one of my favorite wedding movies, but one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s a tear-jerker that gets me every, single, time. I know what’s coming… but it still creeps up on me. The “pink and pink” color scheme of the wedding and the iconic armadillo groom’s cake is unforgettable. But have boxes of tissues on hand.

#3 The Hangover (2009)

I still remember when I first watched this movie – with my whole family. I had to keep looking over at my mum to check she was coping.  It’s pretty much a two-hour refresher of what not to do at a bachelor party. But Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis are genius.

#4 My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

Truly a classic. There’s nothing not to love. It’s a must-watch for everybody.  (And has an awesome sequel to boot). When this first came out, I don’t think we’d laughed this hard in the cinemas for a really long time. There’s a lot in here that will connect with soooooo many people. Timeless.

#5 The Wedding Singer (1998)

As fans of the 80’s, this was ranking at number 1 for a long time before we relooked over some criteria.  Adam Sandler … Drew Barrymore. A drunken toast by Steve Buscemi,  and one of my favorite wedding songs ever – I Wanna Grow Old with You. It’s gaudy 80’s at its best.

#6 Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell. Fun, clever and charming… and forever irresistible. And… Rowan Atkinson playing a vicar officiating his first-ever wedding. THE BEST.

#7 Muriel’s Wedding (1995)

Oh Australia. This ALWAYS makes us homesick. This is an iconically kitsch snapshot of Australiana and infinitely more complex that it first seems on the surface. Toni Collette’s Muriel has stood the test of time and makes us always appreciate those strong amazing women in our lives. Laughs… tears … the best soundtrack ever… it has everything.

#8 Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

COURTESY OF WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT.

Please. This is our life. And we can say it… because we live it. And nothing is more fun than poking fun at the world world we live in. This over the top extravaganza, is a wedding of Hollywood legend and the whole movie reads like a modern day fairytale.

#9 Sex and the City (2008)

GETTY IMAGES

We literally watched this series for years. We grew up on it. So when Carrie and Big finally decide to get married… we’re ALL in.

#10 The Wedding Crashers (2005)

Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher, and Bradley Cooper… an A-List lineup. ALWAYS makes us wish they’d crash some of our weddings. Invitation’s open.

#11  Bride Wars (2009)

Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway Chris Pratt. Terrible reviews. But we love it nonetheless. It’s just a bit of mindless fun. And sometimes, that’s all we want.

#12 The Proposal (2009)

Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool. Dead. See what we did there? But you can’t go wrong with this pairing – Sandra Bullock & Ryan Reynolds – Love it. Just some fun and nothing more.

#13 Mamma Mia (2008)

ABBA. Our world is complete. Oh … and Meryl Streep.

#14 The Philadelphia Story (1940)

If you’re in the mood for a wedding classic, this one’s for you. My father swears I was named after Katharine Hepburn’s character Tracy Lord in this movie. My mum says it was after Grace Kelly’s version of Tracy Lord in High Society.  I’ll take both. But my favorite of the two movies is the incredible Katharine Hepburn as the socialite torn between three men in this 1940 romantic comedy. Iconic wedding ending. WATCH IT!!

#15 Runaway Bride (1999)

Ok, so it’s no Pretty Woman… BUT Julia Roberts + Richard Gere = What’s not to love?

#16 My Best Friends’s Wedding (1997)

Julia Roberts was the queen of wedding movies. Always a feelgood 90’s classic. Easy to curl up with your partner and enjoy. Unrequited love and friendship. Sigh…

#17 American Wedding (2003)

The third installment of the American Pie movies. Omg we laugh and die, and laugh and die. CRINGEWORTHY. I mean we had Stifler’s Mom … Eugene Levey before Schitt’s Creek and an ending to a cultural phenomenon that we vowed we’d never like. But sercretly adored.

#18 Father of the Bride (1991)

GETTY IMAGES

I first saw this back in the 90’s on the big screen. Steve Martin, Diane Keaton. A remake of Vincente Minnelli’s Oscar-nominated film of the same name, which starred Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracy. It’s a great throwback to the family values of the 90’s and no one quite plays stressed out father better than Steve Martin.

#19 27 Dresses (2008)

I admit it. I’m not a huge Katherine Heigl fan. But 27 Dresses is all there as an almost anti-wedding film (almost) And brides… you’ll appreciate the humor in this rom-com. Guaranteed.

#20 The Wedding Planner (2008)

I’d take J.Lo as a wedding planner anyday. Brilliant. And let’s face it … it’s an iconic wedding movie. Full of fluff and predictable moments. Pure us.  And… young Matthew McConaughey.

And the Runners Up are…

Royal Wedding (1951)

The 1951 film features Fred Astaire’s iconic “dance-across-the-ceiling” performance—yet another reason to see the classic, which is set in England during the time of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s wedding. A true classic. The Golden Age of Hollywood was mesmerizing right?

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Dee and I met while in an INCREDIBLE production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. So this one’s personal. And yes… it’s not a wedding movie. But this cult classic opens with the iconic wedding of Ralph Hapschatt and Betty Munroe and when there’s audience participation (throwing rice along with the on-screen wedding guests) at theaters over the years… then there’s absolutely NO BETTER WEDDING MOVIE. EVER. Just learn the Time Warp.

I Love You Man (2009)

Who doesn’t LOVE Paul Rudd?? Tasked with finding a best man in time for his wedding.  It’s pure wedding movie fluff at it’s best. One for the boys.

Love Wedding Repeat (2020)

Came out on Netflix when most of the world was on Coronavirus lockdown. It was just the quarantine wedding movie we all needed.

The Corpse Bride (2005)

Tim Burton’s wedding whimsy.

Sixteen Candles (1984)

80’s brilliance. I think this is one of my first memories of going to the cinema with friends without our parents. And we literally had no idea at the time of the genius of John Hughes. But were forever infatuated with Molly Ringwald and all rode out our crazy tour of adolescence together with her. The chaos of those scenes where her sister is getting married and everyone is too busy to remember her sixteenth birthday… WE KNOW THAT CHAOS. Intimately.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016)

Have to admit. I only just watched this movie recently. And yes, it was juvenile. And stupidly funny. Kind of. But we laughed more than we thought we would.

You Again (2010)

Um… Betty White. That’s all.  Oh no it’s not!!! Add… Jamie Lee Curtis & Sigourney Weaver. Now that’s all. I think I might move this one off the Runner’s Up and swap it out with something above. Love this.

The Great Gatsby (2013)

Party like Gatsby. Has one of the most iconic wedding gowns of movie lore. And Leo. So there’s that.

WARNER BROS./COURTESY NEAL PETERS COLLECTION

Love Actually (2003)

I always think of this movie as a Christmas movie rather than a wedding movie. But if we can slide The Rocky Horror Picture Show into a best wedding movie of all time list, then Love Actually can be both right? Anyone up for a December celebration??

UNIVERSAL/COURTESY NEAL PETERS COLLECTION

The Sound of Music (1965)

An icon. AND … that wedding scene at the end. Gives me goosebumps. Every. Single. Time.

20TH CENTURY FOX/COURTESY NEAL PETERS COLLECTION

Funny Face (1957)

Audrey Hepburn in a Givenchy gown. And a soundtrack with songs by George and Ira Gershwin. It’s a TOTAL win-win.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES/COURTESY NEAL PETERS COLLECTION

The Graduate (1967)

Because… it’s The Graduate. One of the best love triangles of all time and also one of THE BEST interrupting-a-wedding-scenes ever seen on film.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

This is our pic. We love it. Marilyn and Jane. The iconic double wedding during the final scene sees both women wear incredible wedding dresses inspiring real-life brides across the globe. And when we exit quarantine… this is how we’re going to do it.
