Anzac Day 2020

Lest We Forget

‘Now more than ever we can empathise with their experience of being separated from those they love for the greater good of our society. Always a profound service. Stay safe, stay home.’ ⠀Anzac Day 2020 is different this year. But our love remains the same.

In the spirit of Anzac Day, we show our gratitude to all who served. These photos are probably a little too small to see clearly. But this is Thomas Alfred Sydney Fitzgerald – Able Seaman, R.A.N. 1940-45 … my grandfather. ⠀

Thomas was mobilized on 9th September 1940 at age 18 years & 2 weeks. He was immediately posted to HMAS Rushcutter, the naval training school for radar & anti-submarine warfare located at Rushcutter Bay, Sydney. On 10th February 1941, Tom was assigned to the crew of the Corvette minesweeper, HMAS Lismore. The following images are of the Lismore.

This photo of my grandfather (he’s on the right) was taken at the Port of Suez, 1941.⠀

We all have family to remember and give gratitude to on Anzac Day. We all have grandparents, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters who we remember ; giving their service and sacrifice in times of war and crisis.

So how did we mark Anzac Day 2020?

While thousands of people across Australia and New Zealand stood outside their homes at dawn to mark Anzac Day 2020, during lockdown, our contribution are these precious photos and an online live stream. ⠀

Family history is everything. Photos tell our stories when words can’t. Thank you so much to all who served. We owe you all so much. Lest We Forget.
