How Imagen AI Became Our Secret Editing Teammate – The AI Editing Software Every Photographer Should Try

AI Photo Editing Software That Changed Everything

If you’d told us a few years ago that AI editing software would become an essential part of our workflow, we probably would have smiled politely and gone back to our Lightroom catalogs.

We’ve been approached by companies before. Lots of them. The promises are always big – save time, save effort, improve quality. But more often than not, the reality is the opposite.

We’ve tried outsourcing. We’ve tried in-house editing teams. In the end, nothing ever seemed to match what we could do ourselves. Because for us, editing isn’t just “fixing” an image. It’s storytelling. It’s about color, tone, and emotion. It’s knowing what to do in backlit sun, in dark ballrooms, during rainy days, or in challenging light. It’s decades of experience in every click and curve.

So when a company called Imagen approached us back in the pandemic to try their AI editing software, our first reaction was, “Thanks… but no thanks. We just don’t have the time to try anything new.”

Why We Finally Said Yes to AI Editing

The world was in lockdown. Weddings were postponed, travel stopped, and suddenly we had… time.

Imagen told us, If you upload 5,000 images, our AI will learn your editing style.

We thought: Interesting… but will it really?

We decided to go all in. Not 5,000 images. Not 10,000. We uploaded 100,000 images from our archives. Years of our work. Every lighting scenario. Every season. Every mood.

When we sent our first full wedding gallery for AI editing, it came back looking 80% like us. Our jaws dropped. We were shocked. Excited. And slightly nervous.

The Secret: It’s Still Us

Here’s what made us believers:

  • Every time we tweak the images that come back, the AI keeps learning.
  • With each edit, Imagen understands us more – and now, our galleries come back looking pretty much 100% like we’d manually edited them. We’re doing less and less tweaking now as Imagen knows us. After all, our editing profile IS US!

And it is our work. It’s not a shortcut. It’s not “AI stealing our style.”

It’s literally decades of learning – condensed, cloned into us, and assisting us.

Instead of explaining our vision to another human and hoping they understand, we have an AI-trained teammate that knows exactly what we’d do in every situation.

The Turning Point: Hundreds of Weddings, Zero Compromise

When the world reopened after the pandemic, we had hundreds of destination weddings in Japan on the books – the backlog of COVID couples. The pressure was huge.

Only Imagen made sure our galleries were:

  • Delivered on time
  • Consistent with our quality
  • Never lacking in detail or style

We still check every single image manually – because we’re not ready to hand over everything to AI. But Imagen has given us our time back, without sacrificing quality.

Now: AI Photo Editing + AI Video Editing

The newest chapter? AI video editing.

Just like when photography shifted from film to digital, we believe we’re at another creative turning point. Back then, the photographers who embraced the change thrived. Today, the same is true with AI editing software.

We’ve now been Imagen ambassadors for years – and honestly, we can’t imagine our workflow without it.

Our Style, Available to You

Imagen asked us if we’d make our editing profile – The Modern Classic – available to other photographers.

After thinking it over, we said yes.

Why? Because we know not everyone has thousands of images or decades of editing experience to build a profile from scratch.

The Modern Classic style is:

  • Slightly matte
  • Romantic
  • Timeless
  • A nod to Kodak Portra film colors

You can:

  1. Use our profile as-is for your edits.
  2. Or use it as a base for your own style – tweak the images when they come back, keep doing this, and once you’ve edited 5,000+ images, you’ll have a profile that’s 100% your own.

About 37 Frames’s AI Profile – The Modern Classic

Our Modern Classic profile wasn’t created overnight. It’s the result of years behind the camera and thousands of hours refining edits to work beautifully across cultures, lighting conditions, and locations.

The style is less saturated, designed to complement a wide range of skin tones. It’s a hybrid inspired by Kodak Portra film — the pinker undertones of 160 film, the medium saturation of 400 film, with the medium contrast and fine grain of both.

While there’s a nod to film, the finish is contemporary and polished, ensuring timeless appeal. Color emphasis is fine-tuned in the HSL and calibration modules:

  • Oranges are de-emphasized for creamier skin tones
  • Greens are warmed compared to the cooler greens of Fuji 400H
  • Blue shadows are toned down for a natural palette

A slightly semi-matte look gives a romantic, print-friendly finish. We achieve this by reducing highlights and lifting shadows, ensuring details remain visible in any light. Consistency in these settings keeps our work cohesive, even when shooting in drastically different lighting scenarios.
