*** A quick UPDATE: JANUARY 2022. Can I travel to Japan now? At the time of writing this (1/25), Japan’s borders still remain closed to international visitors.

However, The Omicron wave will almost certainly peak here in the next few days/week if it follows the patterns we’ve seen in other countries and the WHO have called for ending international travel restrictions. Based on all this, the main question for travel to Japan is, will Japan be fast enough to get the country open to tourists by the Spring cherry blossom season? And after opening will there be quarantine measures for tourists?

The Japanese government has still not provided us with a roadmap or timeline for the coming months. While we’re being optimistic for Spring 2022, at this point most of the tourism/hospitality industry here are only giving opening a 50% chance. We’re hoping to hear more by end-February. But for now, just to be on the safe side, we are once again rescheduling all our inbound destination weddings and elopements for late March/early April and postponing them to later this year or Spring 2023 & beyond.

Due to all this rescheduling, our 2022/2023 availability updates are as follows:

*Please note – these updates are for PLANNING services. Our photography team are still accepting all photography/video inquiries, so please do reach out if you are interested in these services.

2022 Availability Updates

CHERRY BLOSSOMS 2022 (late March-early April): RESCHEDULING. We are currently working with all our wedding/elopement couples to find suitable dates to reschedule to later this year or Spring 2023.

LATE SPRING 2022 (Late April, May, June): The feeling is that there is a 75% chance Japan could be open by late April. We are optimistic but working with our late Spring couples on PLAN B dates just in case.

SUMMER 2022 (July, August): We have minimal dates available. Summer is almost full due to the pandemic rescheduling of existing 2020/2021 celebrations & those couples already booked in for summer 2022.

FALL 2022 (September-December): We have minimal dates available. Fall is almost full due to the Covid rescheduling of existing 2020/2021 celebrations & those couples already booked in for 2022. Please note: Peak fall dates are full and we can sadly not take on any new bookings over this time, especially Micro & larger Destination Weddings. However, there is some availability either side of peak dates for Elopements (no guests). There is also availability for photography-only inquiries (no planning). So please reach out very soon if a Fall 2022 celebration is something you’re considering & dreaming about.

2023 Availability Updates

CHERRY BLOSSOMS 2023 (late March-early April): FULL. We unfortunately can’t accept any more bookings for peak blossom season. There are now 3 years of postponed Spring weddings and elopements booked over this time and we sadly can’t accept any new inquiries. Thank you truly for understanding & if you’d like to go on our Wait List (as the situation is fluid & changeable) please do reach out.

SPRING 2023 (March-May): Dates outside of peak cherry blossom season are almost full and filling up fast (especially with many current postponed couples still to set their rescheduled dates). We suggest starting a conversation regarding non-peak Spring 2023 very soon.

PEAK FALL 2023 (October-November): We have minimal dates available. Fall 2023 is almost full due to the Covid rescheduling of existing 2020/2021 celebrations & those couples already booked in for 2022. There is some availability for Elopements (no guests). And there is also availability for photography-only inquiries. So please reach out very soon if a Fall 2023 celebration is something you’re considering & dreaming about.

CAN I STILL CONTACT YOU ABOUT 2022/2023 WEDDING DATES IN JAPAN?

YES!!! Absolutely. Well, for anything outside of our peak 2022/2023 seasons. Please still reach out if you are interested in planning your dream Elopement or Destination Wedding in Japan, as we do always hope to accommodate your preferred dates & every celebration is very important to us. Due to the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, dates are extremely limited with now 2 years worth of rescheduled travel plans and celebrations of our existing clients to refit on the calendar over the coming year (especially in peak seasons). We are very positive for an international border opening in the VERY near future (fingers crossed!!) and cannot wait to start celebrating again!!

For any couples already currently in Japan and considering a 2022 date, we may still be able to assist.

We will continue to post updates on our 37 Frames Blog, Insta Social Media. Especially on the “Can I Travel to Japan” ongoing situation.

Is Japan open now? Cherry Blossoms 2022

Thank you truly for your kind understanding and we are so excited to connect & help in any way possible to make your vision come to life. We would LOVE to be part of your story!

If we took a poll for dream elopement destinations, Tokyo would be very near the top of the results—if not,  the number one spot (we’re a bit biased…). It comes complete with all things synonymous to chic romance including sprawling urban scenes, charming Japanese gardens in the heart of the city and icons galore. Read on for this beautiful Tokyo garden wedding.
Tokyo City Elopement

When eloping is more than a trend, then let’s make it one to remember. There was no other choice than Japan for Julia and Taro. This was their dream. Their vision. And when home is in Germany, and Japan’s borders are closed, this meant a lot of paperwork and uncertainty. Right up to the week of their celebrations. But with Taro being Japanese, things finally (and bureaucratically fell into place). Eventually. And they then eloped in the most hopelessly romantic way possible in Tokyo. With a traditional meets modern theme, and their daughter as the most darling flower girl, this couple incorporated so many of their favorite places and memories. Remembering family. Reliving favorite sights and experiences. Falling in love all over again. Their Tokyo garden wedding so perfectly them.

A Japanese Garden Wedding

There’s nothing more intimate and romantic than saying your vows in the most captivating Japanese garden. Their wedding ceremony in a secret spot in the middle of Tokyo. The perfect place to elope. The perfect place for a Tokyo garden wedding. A small respite from the hustle of the city surrounding them. Koi, Japanese maple leaves and stone bridges. Fall had come early to Tokyo, so the leaves were just slightly past peak color. Nothing taking from away the sheer beauty of their ceremony backdrop though. It was so intimate. So emotional.

With their elopement ceremony pond side, there were almost no sounds of the city. Only birds, a little rustle of leaves, and the koi every now and then giving us a splash to let us know that love was with us. (Yes, koi represent love and commitment in Japan!). The whole atmosphere, the color in which they were immersed, is simply impossible to express in words. It truly was a magical day.

Sushi and Skylines – a Tokyo Elopement finale

Next was a little sake toast before heading off to a Shibuya sushi train. A fun and casual way to celebrate. There’s nothing more iconically Tokyo than cheap, fast sushi! From a quiet Tokyo garden wedding to the sounds of the city. Traditional Japan to modern Tokyo. There’s no other city that does this quite like Tokyo.

We then all made our way through Shibuya. A kiss on the crossing and then straight to the top of Shibuya Sky. They ended their day with sunset and gin as the Tokyo sky turned from orange to pink to deep blue — perfection.

There truly is nothing more beautiful than the Tokyo skyline at sunset. What a finale to the perfect Tokyo elopement. The wind had blown up, so we couldn’t venture up to the top deck. But a tiny corner was open for them both.

Tokyo Sunset at Shibuya Sky

With kisses at sunset, and drinks as the sun went down over their favorite city in the world, they relived their absolutely stunning day. Floating high above Tokyo. The neon lights appearing to dance just for them. Like the sign says…Paradise.

This Tokyo Fall Elopement, in a beautiful garden, with rustic florals, touches of Japan and Germany interwoven throughout… was everything they dreamt it would be and more. Worth every bit of work to get here. Completely them. Unique and personalized. Thank you Tokyo. The most amazing city elopement for such a lovely couple. We’re now connected for life.

Wishing you both so much happiness. With LOVE from all of us here at 37 Frames.

This stunning elopement at Sasayuri-Ann just outside of Kyoto was the experience of a lifetime. With beautiful views of Mount Mura and Mount Takami, there were magical moments at every turn.

And isn’t that what elopements are all about? Experiences shared. Life journeys started. And being totally immersed in each other as you embrace the future through promises, vows and shared memory making. This intimate luxury elopement in Nara prefecture provided all this and more.

Like the best elopement experiences, it also provided a chance to go far beyond the ordinary wedding customs, and give that rare opportunity to understand and embrace the absolute best of Japan’s inspiring traditional philosophies and magic.

In other words, it was the perfect elopement in Japan. Read on for the full story…

Sasayuri-Ann

Arriving by helicopter from Kyoto, Amina and Philip started their elopement adventure the evening before the big day. Located in the Kii region, they flew over the incredible rainforests, small farms, and profound landscapes before landing at a small clearing near their Rice Terrace Villas. Nara is the landlocked area of Kii where Sasayuri-Ann stands, is historically renowned as a pilgrimage site.

All there to welcome them to Sasayuri-Ann, and hosted by the incredible Matsubayashi Family, we explored the impeccable gardens and enjoyed sunset as preparations began for a Japanese private dinner worthy of a Michelin-star. There were take-your-breath away moments at every turn.

Rice Terrace Villas

The villa, beside rice fields and nearby temples, and with incredible views of the National Park in the foreground, is such a poetic journey.  When planning this elopement we wanted to make sure to include the most enchanting traditions of Japan, as well as making sure Amina & Philip’s own vision was created as well. Being half American and half Japanese meant the entwining of both cultures was so incredibly important.

And if there’s one absolute manifesto that 37 Frames adheres to without question, is that every elopement or wedding planned, is a journey. The journey of the couple. They journey of the place they’ve chosen to marry in. Putting them on the path for their life together.

Secret locations in Japan for an Elopement

Amina and Philip first came to us after their destination wedding in Italy had to change due to covid. They wanted something private, luxury, and somewhere that had never been done before. It was important that they have the freedom to celebrate their own way, with their own customs, all while incorporating the beauty of Japan. Their home right now.

The planning team was straight onto it and after an exhaustive search, a dear friend who owns Tokyo Personalized, a luxury travel company finally said, “I think I have just the place for you”. And she was right.

After many, many emails and some trips to Nara to meet in person, we felt like it was all going to be the perfect location for this romantic couple. Epic. Spiritual. And full of beauty everywhere the eye wandered.

Everyone asks for secret or private locations to elope in Japan. And we felt like we’d found the perfect place for them. Sasayuri-Ann lived up to expectations. And went beyond. It had been there waiting for them.

A Wedding morning in Nara

Sasayuri-Ann says that one of its goals is to take the essence of Japan and utilize the forces of nature, mountains, waterfalls, rice paddies, to put us in touch with our souls.  On the morning of their wedding, this beautiful couple woke up in the Ozunu Villa nestled next to a forest to the sound of singing birds. A sunrise view of rice paddies, and the incredible zen garden. There was a lyrical feeling to the morning as they embarked for their sunrise waterfall blessing at the mystical Akame 48 Falls.

This incredible place, the Forty-eight Waterfalls of Akame is a holy place for Shugendo Mountain Buddhist Priests and it’s also the birthplace of Ninja. Also a place where the samurai trained. The power and energy felt at these waterfalls can’t be ignored. It truly is one of the most magical places we’ve seen in Japan.

Read on for more of this incredible elopement in Nara

Akame 48 Falls Wedding Blessing

Matsubayashi-san is also actually a monk, and practices Shugendo-Yamabushi techniques which made him the perfect person to lead the beautifully intimate waterfall blessing.  With UNESCO World Heritage Mount Koya, the center of  the Shingon sect of Buddhism, it was a private and powerful morning. It was here through nature that they started their wedding day. It was here, on this morning, that the richness of Japan became even more unforgettable.  And the powers of nature blessed these two beautiful souls to start their journey together.

Such an untouched part of Japan. It’s completely off the tourist track. And the perfect place to elope & find Mindfulness.

Private Villa Wedding in Japan

After the waterfall blessing it was back to Ozunu, home of wellness and energy to start getting ready for their wedding day. Amina upstairs and Philip downstairs. Both with a beautiful view of the stunning zen garden (& champagne or local craft beers in hand!). Early December, so probably classified as a winter elopement, although the weather was so warm it definitely felt more like late fall. So warm in the sun.

And then there they were. Looking like they’d just stepped off the pages of Harpers Bazaar.

Sasayuri, a Japanese Lilly

The exquisitely fragrant sasayuri, the native Japanese lily, flourished in the countryside throughout Japan. Until environmental change led to these stunning lilies now being a rarity.

The beautiful natural sight of blooming sasayuri flowers, we once took for granted, has been lost. But Sasayuri-ann is named in their honor. Those rare and beautiful icons.

So it was only natural that Amina’s bouquet gave a nod to this history. A beautiful modern lilly bouquet to complete the wedding attire. Truly spectacular on every level.

Elopement Ceremony at a Beautiful Private Villa

With traditional Japanese musicians creating the perfect atmosphere, they had an emotional first look. The local artisans and masters the perfect backdrop to this intimate moment.

And then it was straight into the ceremony. The musicians on koto and traditional bamboo flute playing during Amina’s stunning processional. Down the cobbled path past the zen garden to a waiting Philip.

Hundreds of friends and family zoomed in from around the world. And there were tears from everyone. Including all of us.

Teahouse Toast

It was a champagne toast (in traditional Japanese tea cups!!) at the quaint little teahouse in the garden. The sun creating beautiful shadows and giving the entire landscape an incredible glow.

The entire garden is epic. The view from everywhere overwhelming. The garden seeming so much more expansive than it actually is. All because of ‘shakkei’.

Shakkei – The Art of Borrowed Landacape

The breathtaking garden was designed with the concept of ‘shakkei‘. The literal meaning of shakkei is ‘borrowed scenery’ or ‘borrowed landscape.’ This is a technique where distant views are incorporated into the garden setting and become part of the design.

When the designer captures this landscape they make it part of the design, and it remains alive. Shakkei is an ancient concept that was used in Japan long before anyone gave it a name. Bringing distant landscapes into gardens, for example, was practiced in Japanese gardens as early as the Heian period (794-1185 A.D.).

The Ozunu garden looking almost like a painting. And in the mornings, those incredible mountains often covered by a sea of clouds. It’s one of those once in a lifetime things. And changes every moment.

Boutique Lunch Platter

With a view of those incredible mountains, overlooking the garden, it was time for a light lunch. A boutique platter, a picnic for 2, to tide them over until their upcoming wedding night dinner.

And followed by a first dance in the late afternoon sun. Amongst the iconic pine trees and rock garden.

Helicopter Departure

And just like that, the day was done. Kyoto beckons to start their honeymoon at Hoshinoya in Arashiyama. The helicopter was back at the natural clearing nearby and it was time to leave their stunning wedding ceremony location. Time to finish their beautiful elopement in Nara. Now though, a piece of their history. A part of them.

There were no goodbyes to Ozunu. Just many ‘see you soons’!

Off they flew. Into the sunset. Back over the forests and rice fields & the last lingering colors of Autumn. Over villages and untouched Japan. Back to real life, leaving this incredible place untouched by time.

Kyoto Higashiyama

A couple of days later we met them in Kyoto. Time to relive their elopement experience. Talk through the memories and delights. A quick photo shoot through Kyoto to finish the story and now clients feeling like dear friends.

It truly was an incredible wedding experience on every level. Take us all back…

When alternative wedding plans turn into the perfect summer elopement in Atami, Shizuoka, Japan.

A beautiful summer elopement in Japan featured here on the blog today. Their elopement video the perfect memory for both them. And for family back home.

Their wedding plans in Nigeria were still disrupted by extended COVID-19 travel restrictions. So elopement plans here in Japan went into effect. And it was intimate, private, fun and beyond magical.

With breathtaking views of the emerald colored mountains and the deep turquoise sea, they connected with nature and each other. Sweeping vistas. Mt Fuji nearby. And a private elopement picnic all to themselves in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Congratulations Esther and Daodu. Truly a beautiful celebration. They did a YouTube Live to their myriad of subscribers, had a first dance under the beating sun and took in a pale pink sunset to finish.

A Private Garden Elopement in Japan

Their private garden wedding in Japan was held in the ‘Secret Garden’ at the beautiful, Akao Herb & Rose Garden, one of the leading rose gardens in the world. Set high on the spectacular Atami Cliffs in Shizuoka. Shizuoka is made up of two kanji, shizu, meaning “still” or “calm”; and oka, meaning “hills”. Stunning vistas, with so many vignettes, filled with romance & wonder. The perfect place to exchange vows and commit to each other.

After the I do’s, they explored the dramatic rose-covered grounds around Coeda House, designed by the famous architect Kengo Kuma. A stop for rose-infused treats & refreshments.

We all then traveled the back roads of Atami to take in the Izu Skyline before arriving at Jukkkoku Pass. Literally meaning “ten countries pass”, it is claimed that ten old provinces of Japan can be seen from the summit of the pass. The summit is reached by taking a darling cable car, 316m in length. At the top their picnic awaits. Time to just be…together… offering a superb view of iconic Mt Fuji on a clear day.  From the Pass, there’s a complete panoramic view of Suruga Bay, Sagami Bay and more. Their story drenched in drama, romance and the promise of exquisite adventures to come.

We loved planning this elopement. The vision all came together perfectly. The 37 Frames elopement team and the local vendors all working together beautifully to create this magical day.

And it was truly was spectacular.

Here is their beautiful wedding video with meaningful words and vows. (Highlight reel at the end of the post!)

Eloping in Japan is Magical. No matter what the season!

We always tell our couples, that we can never control what the day will bring : whether that’s rain, typhoons, or something equally dramatic. But the day will be perfect no matter what is thrown their way. As its theirs. Their story. Their day.

Eloping might not be a couple’s first choice for their wedding this year in this pandemic world. But love always finds a way. And with an open heart and an open mind, these alternative wedding plans sometimes just end up being the wedding of your dreams.

In a perfect summer elopement in Japan, Esther and Daodu committed their lives to one another. It was emotional and raw. Here’s their beautiful wedding video in Japan. A story to remember forever. (2021 couples… your stories are ones for the ages…)!

We celebrated Jenny & Ryo’s elopement in Shizuoka, Japan in the middle of a beautiful, humid summer.

We celebrated in one of the most stunning places we’ve ever seen—the iconic green tea fields of Japan. A Green Tea Field Wedding. With Mt Fuji nearby, and the local community so intent on making their day special, this all culminated in creating a stunning backdrop to their sweet ceremony. A beautiful intimate elopement celebrated with family both in person and other special friends and guests attending remotely from afar. The perfect adventure elopement in Japan.

Real Wedding: Elope in Japan - Shizuoka Green Tea Fields

If you’re at all familiar with Japan’s summers, you’ll know that a lot people might not think of summer in Japan as the ideal “peak season” for a wedding. The heat and humidity can be a lot for some.  But sometimes, it’s not about the ‘ideal time’. Or the ‘perfect temperature’. Sometimes it’s ALL about the couple. The location. The celebration.  As it always should be. These past couple of years have made dates and timing the least important part of celebrating. Changes, plan B’s, alternative dates, last minute cancellations, all making us realize that the perfect ‘when’ of celebrating doesn’t exist. ‘Perfect’ comes from deep within. Not from without.  Seasons being just a fleeting representation of where we are on this life journey. And we should celebrate at any time.

“I like winter just as summer. I love autumn and spring. Each season has its own bliss.”

― Anoir Ou-Chad

When alternative wedding plans turn into a dream summer elopement in Japan.

So, when Jenny & Ryo’s wedding plans in the Shenandoah mountains in the US were one of (literally) millions of weddings around the world disrupted by COVID-19, elopement plans here in Japan went into effect. And it was emotional and perfect.

And it was summer.

Planning a wedding in Japan can be overwhelming at the best of times, but getting it done in the days of covid was always going to be a challenge. But one the wedding planning team were up for. Outdoors and natural. Authentic and meaningful. A wedding showing the essence of Japan. A celebration perfectly matching these two beautiful souls.

Surrounded by the stunning green tea fields of Shizuoka,  they exchanged vows. They danced in the sunset. They had US family virtually attend their Green Tea Field Wedding…

In Jenny’s words:

“When we saw the views we fell head over heels in love! We originally planned a wedding in the mountains in the US (but can’t go to the US now because of corona) and we’re so sad to have to cancel. So much of our original wedding vision has had to change, and since we are both in Tokyo we thought a wedding with mountain views wasn’t possible, but then Dee showed us Chanoma. We knew immediately it was the place for us! We are a laid back, very chill couple, so being out in the beauty of nature was very important to us…”

And it was spectacular. Here’s their story:

Real Wedding: Elope in Japan - Shizuoka Green Tea Fields

Elopement Wedding Accommodation

We booked the most beautiful of local Airbnb’s for Jenny & Ryo — a 37 Frames favorite, UWANOSORA. It’s full of the spirit of Japan. And the family that own the rental are SO accommodating and always excited for our couples. UWANOSORA is all about embracing the theme of relaxation and calm.

They were having a quiet wedding breakfast when we arrived. To the sounds of rustling bamboo and running water. Feeling their deep connection, not just with nature, but with each other.

Elopement Morning Fun

Megumi started Jenny’s makeup while Ryo started wedding shenanigans. The story goes… Ryo had found the perfect wine colored suit online for his wedding day. It truly was gorgeous. However, as sometimes happens with online orders… when it arrived it was fire engine red, not wine. And didn’t resemble the ordered suit at all. The cut, the style, the color. The fake pockets. Nope. Naturally Jenny immediately vetoed the suit for the wedding celebrations. But that didn’t stop Ryo from sneaking the suit into his suitcase for some wedding morning pranks. Ryo traumatizing Jenny with the suit making a surprise appearance. It had to be a part of the day. Of course.

After the suit-gate scandal subsided, Ryo went to get ready in another part of the Airbnb while Jenny zoomed with absent family and friends. Letters were read. Tears flowed. Laughter and emotions running high. Getting to witness the support and incredible love from family on elopement days is a privilege we’ll never take for granted.

Their morning was about candid moments and authentic excitement. And experiencing the gamut of emotions that a wedding day inevitably brings.

And then it was time for a first look on the stairs outside, surrounded by bamboo and the sounds of nature.Their first look was touching and emotional! Even the 37 Frames team shed a few tears from afar. That stunning morning light looking ethereal as Jenny came up the stairs.

Wedding Photography & The Wedding Picnic

After the first look, we all got into our cars and headed out to some local locations near the ceremony site. This was our nod to Japan. For now, our adopted home. Shizuoka is made up of two kanji,  shizu, meaning “still” or “calm”; and oka, meaning “hills”. We held onto these references as we all drove through the calm hills in this part of Japan. Feeling the symbolism. All while we slowly made our way to the stunning tea fields.

We stopped for photos at a deserted shrine. The shrine embracing the virtues of wisdom and courage. Theperfect symbol of their union.

The team had gone days earlier to scope out a spot for a surprise picnic and some scenic places for their photos. As well as the shrine, they came across a completely charming campsite by a stunning river.  The elderly owners, just over the moon about hosting a picnic for our beautiful couple. With woods and forests surrounding the river, and the place completely to themselves, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Was this really Japan? This peace? This feeling of remote privacy?  And then Pip, Jenny & Ryo’s corgi arrived to join them. And that’s when this elopement turned into an even more magical experience. The 3 of them together. Family.

Following in the footsteps of Travelers

This part of Shizuoka is filled with incredible stories of endurance, life, love and history. The Old Tōkaidō road runs this length of coast where so many have walked in the centuries before us. Following in the footsteps of ancestors and travelers. The Old Tōkaidō road connected Kyoto to Edo. On this day, connecting two hearts. And then on to the ceremony location. Anticipation high. We drive through the small winding backstreets of local villages. Passing quaint settings and rural towns. All the while Jenny & Ryo forming a deep and profound bond with this special place, that is now forever a part of their history together.

We arrived at the tea fields mid-afternoon where we connected with the local tea master and got ready for the ceremony. Ryo’s mother had arrived to be the sole guest in person. Jenny’s family were zoomed in remotely. We had beautiful late afternoon light in the green tea fields. High in the hills. For centuries tea has represented harmony, peace, enlightenment and connection. And as such, it couldn’t have been a more perfect place to exchange vows and commit to each other.

A stunning Ceremony in the Green Tea Fields of Japan

Jenny and Ryo embraced all these themes during their vows, first dance and toast. We were hoping for the added bonus of Mt Fuji presiding over the ceremony. But the summer haze had her tucked away out of view. Her presence was felt though. You can always feel Mt Fuji’s energy even when she’s hidden from view. Mt Fuji being called the heart and soul of Japan, her presence is always a powerful feeling of life and love.

Pip the corgi (kind of) excitedly walked Jenny down the “aisle” (after needing to be carried up the mountain – Pip, not Jenny!) — a tradition that can be included even when you’re off the beaten path in the wilderness! Alongside their immediate family members (both those present and online) and their beautiful dog, Dee  led the ceremony, full of meaning and so utterly them.

It was a really heartfelt, kind ceremony — the vows were beautiful and meaningful. There was so much love up there in the summer heat, surrounded by all that is beautiful about Japan and more. There were laughs, and a few happy tears. Then they were married. And there were toasts, music and dancing well up to sunset. Pip always wanting to join in with the dancing and drinks and merriment. Green tea & champagne flowed.

Photography at their Green Tea Field Wedding

We have to make sure to pack up and be down the mountain before it gets dark. Because it gets REALLY dark, very quickly out there in Japanese countryside. And it’s a slippery climb down.

We climbed back down the trail and made it to the bottom just as night set in. It might have been the end of the day. But it was only the start of Jenny & Ryo’s journey together. They drove back through those calm hills now as a married couple. Celebrating under the beautiful Japanese stars. Pizza and wine waiting back at the Airbnb for the perfect ending to the perfect elopement in Japan.

HOW TO GET MARRIED IN JAPAN:

A note on the legalities of getting married in Japan:

To get legally married in Japan, 37 Frames can certainly help or give you some advice. Most of our couples do the legalities in their home countries, with our weddings and elopements being a purely symbolic ceremony here in Japan. It is of course possible to do the legalities here if you’re up for that adventure, but it generally takes about 3 days out of your trip (with pre-paperwork done before you arrive). It involves visiting your respective embassies, getting translations (everything must be in Japanese) then going to the local City Hall to finalize it all and one of our team there to assist you.

We can generally get it all done in 3 days but it can occasionally take longer. So you’ll need to keep that in mind when planning days for your destination wedding and honeymoon afterwards. Since most of our couples are also here for their honeymoon etc they don’t want to take too much time away from their plans. However it is all possible and a very only-in-Japan experience.

To do the legalities for you, we do charge a fee which includes the translation of documents, the preparation of Japanese paperwork and someone from our team being with you when you submit it all at the local city hall or ward office.

Then you’ll receive your marriage certificate and be officially married!! All in a Japanese office building!

(And just a quick note: our fee doesn’t include the translation of your Japanese marriage certificate to that of your native language that you’ll need when you return home. Translation costs at the other end are the couple’s responsibility. As it changes country by country and sometimes even state by state. However, official Japanese marriage licenses are recognized everywhere.)

Always here to help in every capacity.

We are beyond excited that one of our amazing wedding venues (Sasayuri-ann Rice Terrace Villa) nominated a 37 Frames “Elope in Japan” wedding film for the Japan International Tourism Film Festival! And we’re finalists!

Great photography becomes a part of your life.

JAPAN International Tourism Film Festival 2021 Finalist. Wow. If there’s one thing we strongly believe in, it’s investing in your memories. Which is why we advocate strongly for making sure you have quality photography for your day. And, especially when these image will be a part of your family history for generations. It really is the one thing you shouldn’t compromise on. Because, photography is quite literally, forever.

Our photography team has won a host of amazing awards for their wedding stories around the world. And now… it’s the video team’s turn. Congratulations.

37 Frames is now showcasing wedding films too.

The nomination for one of our wedding films into the JAPAN International Tourism Film Festival came a little out of the blue. The amazing owner of the Sasayuri-ann Rice Terrace Villa was overwhelmingly moved by one of our elopement videos. So, he went ahead and nominated on behalf of us. And we’re thrilled to be a JAPAN International Tourism Film Festival 2021 Finalist.

I would never have thought of entering a wedding video into a Tourism film festival. However, when planning a destination wedding in Japan or an elopement ceremony here in this beautiful country, we do have a mission statement. It’s all over the Destination Wedding Japan website:

WE’RE ABOUT CREATING SOMETHING MEANINGFUL. AS UNIQUE AS THE PEOPLE WE’RE CELEBRATING. WE’RE ABOUT SHOWCASING JAPAN. IN ALL IT’S NATURAL WONDER & AWE. WE CELEBRATE YOU.

Showcasing Japan. Cerebrating you. Natural. Meaningful. Wonder and awe. So yes… I guess it does fit the genre. In a very intimate way.

Wedding films are showcasing more than a vacation. And more than a culture. A wedding video is real. Emotional and raw. A wedding film is showcasing an experience. It’s showcasing a celebration of place, of people, of life. So we’re incredibly honored that Mr Matsubayashi went ahead and nominated a 37 Frames wedding into the International Tourism Film Festival. As it would never have have crossed our minds to enter ourselves.

We had the lovely news today that we’re finalists in two categories. And the results and presentations will be held at Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto on March 3. It’ll all be online this year with Japan still in a State of Emergency. But we’re very excited to settle in and watch all these amazing films showing how amazing Japan is. And to be able to share our love of this country that is our adopted home with so many others around the country.

Here’s a little information about the Film Festival:

Japan World Tourism Film Festival 2021

“Tourism is about dialogue and the search for peace in the world. In a world where conflict between countries is still rife, COVID-19 has led to suspicion and selfishness among people. The origin of the word “tourism” comes from the I Ching’s “Guan Guo Zhi Guang”, which means to communicate one’s own attractions as well as to accept and understand the attractions of others. Through tourism, we can get to know the culture and people of distant countries and have a dialogue with them. Herein lies the contribution of tourism to peace.

The Japan International Tourism Film Festival aims to promote “better tourism” by focusing on tourism films, awarding prizes to outstanding films and filmmakers, discovering new expressions of tourism films, and promoting digital marketing, VR and X-rays, which are urgent issues for tourism films. The Japan International Tourism Film Festival is a combination of a competition and a symposium, with the aim of discovering new expressions of tourism films, linking them with marketing, and improving tourism film techniques using VR and XR.

The 2021 edition of the festival is held as “Online” in 2nd and 3rd March,  2021. The venue is Kyotomizu Temple in Kyoto.”

37 Frames Wedding Films

With more than 1200 film entries this year, we’re more than happy to just be finalists. I don’t think we can expect anything more of ourselves. The film entered is from a real wedding day. A real elopement. It’s not a promotional video for marketing. Our couples are not models. Their videos are of one of the most real and emotional events of their life. We are just so honored that films and photography that wecreate on real wedding days, are considered to be of a level to make the finals with commercial marketing films.

So THANK YOU Mr Matsubayashi. Thank you for the nomination. And thank you JAPAN World Tourism Film Festival. We’re looking forward to March 3. And we can’t wait to create more wedding films for all our amazing couples getting married or eloping in Japan in 2021 and 2022 and beyond.

“The Weddings Never Stopped. Even More are on their Way.”

Here come the 2021 & 2022 destination wedding celebrations in Japan.

What a year it’s been for the wedding industry. Looking SO FORWARD to the second half of 2021 and all of 2022. The Weddings Boom is Coming!

“If there’s a word I never want to hear again, it’s ‘pivoting,’” said Ms. Oren, the Los Angeles-based planner. “What I do is so tactile. I have zero aspirations to move what I do to the digital world. I think all people want is to gather and get sweaty on the dance floor.” @nytimes

Agreed.
WE CAN’T WAIT. Thank you!!! HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOO……… The planning is allllllll underway. The Weddings Boom is Coming.

Wedding boom in Japan for 2021

For us here at 37 Frames, 2020 celebrations still went forward, albeit on a much smaller scale. Stunning elopements. Intimate micro-weddings. All of us, our couples and wedding colleagues and vendors alike, pushed through. A large number of our couples postponed, (and even those who did get married in 2020, pushed their receptions to 2021.) And we’ve all changed the way we celebrate. It was a defining year for all of us.

Our worldwide wedding industry market report was released recently. AND IT VIVIDLY showed the suffering finances of the entire wedding industry in 2020. However, it also shows that it’s rapidly improving, and predicts there will be a significant increase in domestic wedding revenue this year. And we’ll be back on course for destination weddings in 2022!!!!! YAY!!!!!!! We can confirm this is the case for us here at 37 Frames. Our Destination Weddings in Japan team are truly deep in planning mode for a record number of 2022 celebrations (due to the postponements and rebooking of all our 2020/2021 weddings + the 2022 couples ready to tie the knot!!)

Dreaming of a Destination Wedding in Japan

We’ve been DREAMING of the day we can all travel again. The day we can celebrate with family and friends. When we can elope in distant lands and have the journey of a lifetime.

AND BOOM! 2022 is the year. (And 2021 is the year to make it happen!)

We can happily report that Dee has been zooming with amazing couples non-stop and we’re thrilled to be booking more couples than ever for 2022/23. How incredibly joyous that all these adventurous souls are forward-thinking and are reveling in planning their future celebrations. All after this incredibly socially-distanced year. Full of disappointments, full of family separations. Full of anxiety and uncertainty. But 2021 so far has put things back on course. While we might not actually be holding many celebrations until the second half of this year, the planning and bookings have started and the team are back together. Finally we’re back to doing what we love most. Incredible, meaningful, tangible destination weddings in Japan. And 2022 is set to boom. Japan Wedding Boom Coming in 2022

A Year of Tough Choices

The deeply personal nature of weddings made planning during the pandemic even more difficult. Do we elope? Wait? Do we have a celebration closer to home? Get married now and celebrate later?

But everything has started to get a little clearer now. Little by little. As Japan prepares to host the 2020NE Olympics and as vaccines are rolling out worldwide, the race to schedule weddings and celebrations is on. Travel is one of the most googled things right now!! AND.. dates for 2022 are at a premium. But of course the great thing about destination weddings are that weekdays are always popular, meaning more availability. However, if a 2022 destination wedding/honeymoon is one the cards, it’s important to understand the demand for venues and vendors because of rebooking of so many beautiful celebrations. Japan Wedding Boom Coming in 2022.

Changes to stay

A lot of the way 2020 made us change the way we celebrate will remain, however this year and next will also bring about a revival. A revival of events and celebrations. Of love and parties and friendship and days full of hugs and dance floors and joy. We still have a way to go. But the emotional authenticity, the deeper meaning of uniting, and the smaller nature of weddings and elopements in general are here to stay for the time being. And the micro-wedding has evolved as a major force in the industry. And we haven’t been this excited about a revival since… well… ever.

Yes. The Weddings Boom is Coming. And we can’t wait.

When alternative wedding plans turn into the perfect fall elopement in Karuizawa, Nagano, Japan.

A beautiful autumn elopement in Japan on the blog today. When their wedding plans in Europe were one of (literally) millions of weddings around the world disrupted by COVID-19 in the year that was 2020, elopement plans here in Japan went into effect. And it was intimate, highly emotional and beyond perfect.

Surrounded by the stunning Nagano fall foliage, Japan, they exchanged vows. They had an intimate garden lunch outside. Took in the sunset. Had family virtually attend. And they finished the day with a perfect luxury campfire riverside.

We loved planning this elopement. The vision all came together perfectly. The 37 Frames elopement team and the local vendors all working together beautifully to create this magical day.

And it was truly was spectacular.

Eloping in Japan is Magical. No matter what the day (or year!) brings.

We always tell our couples, that we can never control what the day will bring : whether that’s rain, typhoons, or something equally dramatic. But the day will be perfect no matter what is thrown their way. As its theirs. Their story. Their day. Ok, so in our 20 year wedding career we’ve never seen a world pandemic… but the moral is the same.

Eloping might not be a couple’s first choice for their wedding this year. But love always finds a way. And with an open heart and an open mind, these alternative wedding plans sometimes just end up being the wedding of your dreams.

In a perfect fall elopement in Japan, H+R committed their lives to one another. It was emotional and raw. Here’s their beautiful wedding video in Japan. A story to remember forever. (2020 couples… your stories are ones for the ages…)!
